RadioRocker is the simple way to listen to terrestrial radio on your Mac.
This isn't a streamer for internet radio, RadioRocker contains over 5,000 stations from across the United States.  Choose what state and choose the station and you're off and running.

RadioRocker is perfect if you want to listen to a sporting event in another state or town.  For instance: if you're from Massachusetts and you miss listening to WBZ NewsRadio 1030 for all your news, simply pull up the list for Massachusetts, double-click on WBZ.  All of a sudden you're listening to WBZ right on your Mac.

Want to listen to a game in Pittsburgh?  Select Pennsylvania as the state and choose your favorite station.  Like the mix of a station in California, but you live in Virginia, select California as the state and choose the station.

Station Website

Want to go to the stations website and check out any promotions or learn more about the disc jockeys or anything.  Simply click the globe next to the digital readout and you'll instantly go to that stations website.

Presets

Just like in your car radio, you can assign presets of your favorite stations to the 6 preset buttons in the player window.  Click "Manage Preset Buttons" in the "File" menu or use Command+P.  Choose which button you want to assign to the song currently playing.  Instantly the preset will be set and you can customize the name of the button.  Next time you launch RadioRocker just click your preset button, just like on your car stereo and you'll be listening to the station you like instantly.

VERSION CHANGES

VERSION 1.2.10

  1. -Fixed issues with issues fixed in previous release.

  2. -

  3. -VERSION 1.2.9

  4. -- Worked on fixing an issue where a station would continue playing after the app has quit, or if it is unhidden and crashes.  I have noticed this is an Intel Mac problem, I am unable to reproduce the issue on my PowerPC Mac

  5. -- Fixed some issues with preset stations and custom stations.  These issues may require repopulation of the presets or custom stations.

  6. -- Again, there are still some issues of stations that require Perian to play.  Depending on the machine whether it is an Intel Mac or PowerPC, some stations play on the first try and some play after 3 or 4 tries.

  7. -- Other user interface issues have been resolved.

  8. -- Working on making partnerships with radio stations to provide more reliable streams.

FAQ:

Where is the station I like?

When compiling the list of stations some stations stream in QuickTime format and some in Windows Media.  Others choose to use RealMedia format.  While there is a RealMedia player for the Mac, it doesn't work with quicktime which is the basis for RadioRocker.  The database is constantly updated, so if your favorite station comes out with a QuickTime compatible stream it will definitely be included.

What else do I need to run RadioRocker?

Since we want to be able to include as many streams as possible, we use QuickTime supported codecs, plus the disk image has web links to Flip4Mac and Perian codecs which will help load streams for Windows Media.  All items require user consent and administrator privileges to install.  Once they are installed from one user account all user accounts on the machine will be able to access the same resources without the need to reinstall for every user.  There is also a digitial font on the disk image which you can install to have a digital output that looks like a dashboard radio.  Simply copy the contents of the folder on the disk image containing the fonts to either your system or user fonts folder.

I keep getting a "The stream is unavailable at this time" message.

There are usually a couple of reasons.  First of all often times the stream may not be active on the server end of the radio station, some may be encoded in a newer version of Windows Media which Flip4Mac has a hard time playing.

What is up with the 1 hour time limit for the trial?

The 1 hour time limit is so you can get a taste of the program.  If you find it useful you can pay the $10.00 for the unlimited version.  RadioRocker took many any hours of planning and gathering information for the database so you don't have to.  Your support goes to the cost of hosting fees and cost of new equipment.

This is a great program, will there be one for the iPhone/iPod Touch?

Yes there will be.  However, I'm still programming on a PowerPC Mac and have no access to an Intel-based Mac.  The iPhone SDK requires an Intel Mac to compile and run iPhone code.  So until I can afford an Intel-mac, the iPhone/iPod Touch version is on hold.  A web app version is currently in the works, however, I'm still working through the problem of getting those streaming files to play on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

I paid for the program, where's my registration?

Once you pay via PayPal a registration email will be sent with in 15 minutes.  Even if you don't recieve the email you can enter the email address you used to purchase the product into the "Enter Registration" box in the application menu.  If it doesn't succeed the first time give it a few minutes and it should activate.

Why does it take so long to load a station list?

The way the database is configured right now it is parsing out a lot of information.  Some of it you see, some of it you don't see.  Depending on the number of stations in the database for any given state the longer it can take to load.

Don't you think the radio industry will be mad at you?

Nope.  Why should they be?  Introducing radio stations to other markets other than those the broadcasting transmitter reaches can help increase revenue for the station and listenership.  Also if a disc jockey is good enough, other station general managers and program managers can hear other talent they might want to recruit, or hear how another station mixes a mix.  This encourages increased competition and diversity among the airwaves.  Plus, it's not like you can't go to their site if you want to.  By having the website of the station one click away in the interface the stations can still make online revenue by your interest in their stream which entices you to visit their site and then by your own accord be subject to their advertising.  If a radio station really has any objection to being listed in RadioRocker, I will remove them only at their request, but realize that if a station decides to remove itself they leave them open to ridicule and embarrassment for not seeing the advantages and exposure of being able to be accessed in a convenient manner.  In addition you face a backlash from the listeners from other parts of the country where even a small amount of revenue can be of value.  Don't think that matters?  If I have to remove a station at the behest of a stations wishes, I will make a big deal out of it, because there should be no excuse for not wanting to have new listeners in other parts of the country.

What about a Windows version?

Not as of yet.  I'm not a windows developer.

Update 7/19

I have been working feverishly to get the database completely working.  Some users have noted that stations I know work on my systems don’t work on their.  Haven’t been able to isolate the issue.  However, I am constantly checking the database as users let me know what stations work and don’t work.

In response to this I am issuing periodic database updates as an installer package.  This means I can update the database without updating the full application.  By doing this I can continue development on the program and still keep the database up to date.

Also, I really want to make this as full featured as possible, so I am working on some new features for registered users.  I also wanted to extend an invitation to radio stations to provide custom streams that we can add to the database.

I am also working on an iPhone web app version of RadioRocker, but I do have to nail down the database before I can release, plus not all the streams work on the iPhone due to the nature of the mobile Safari Web Browser.  I also want to be able to get this on the iTunes App Store as a stand alone app to work over Wifi and Edge and the 3G network.  However, at this time I don’t have an intel based Mac, and that is required in order to compile the programs to see if they work.  If anybody would like to donate to the cause, please click the “Donate” link above.
